A place to explore our inner world and the magical,
weird, challenging and beautiful expressions of healing.
Connecting to Medicine of the Soul
through Awareness
Begin with Awareness of your internal and external worlds.
Hello, beautiful beings! I last left you contemplating how to connect with the Medicine of your Soul, and described how we’ll progress through Self-awareness, Sensations, Acknowledgment, Presence, Witnessing, Expressing, Journaling, Channeling, Energy Work, and Prayer/Intention.
We’ll move through these pieces bit by bit, and each will flow into the other. I appreciate the flow and flexibility of our internal intuition, so this won’t be a step by step approach. Rather, I’ll be giving you tools to let your intuitive self evoke your process. Today we’ll be working with Self-awareness and Sensations.
We can begin to cultivate awareness and mindfulness by becoming aware of the fascinating interaction between our external and internal worlds.
So much happens externally in every moment of our lives. While most of it doesn’t affect us, sometimes, even the most neutral things can. For example, the rain does what is in its nature to do: it falls and provides its essential element of life to all. We don’t need to take it personally, but sometimes it can affect us. If we are in a good mood, we can enjoy the rain and appreciate all that it does for us, nature, and our world. Notice how thinking of rain this way feels in your body right now. Maybe it feels expansive, comforting, or maybe you even feel a sensation of releasing. Many sensations feel good in our bodies—they feel supportive and contribute to our feeling of flow
But if you’re already in a bad mood, the rain may contribute to or even enhance it. Have you ever found yourself saying something like, “Why, rain, must you always do this to me? ARGH!!!” While we may know very well that the rain doesn’t fall to make anyone feel bad, this kind of response is an example of something in our internal system interacting with an external event in a personal way.
But why do we do this? Why would you have this kind of response, especially to something like the rain? A pre-existing condition that resides within you—what I refer to as an energetic or emotional contraction—responded to something in the external world in that moment. Energetically, a contracted part has come out of it’s shell to interact with you and make you aware of it—the external event or stimulus triggers the internal energy. These interactions, through bad feelings, are beautiful opportunities to explore the hidden/contracted parts of ourselves and heal, so let’s take them.
Giving the contracted parts of you some room helps them to unwind and reveal their deeper origins. Note: it is important to know that this healing process takes time and needs to be done with compassion and love. So when you have time for it, either in the moment of trigger or afterward, create some quiet, sacred space to begin to explore this inner experience. If possible, have a journal at hand.
First, simply be with what you are experiencing—not with the story that is in your mind replaying itself, but rather with the sensation, the expression of the energy in your body. There’s no need to change or do anything, just notice what you are experiencing. Witness it without judgement. Be curious. Now write down as much as you can about what you notice: sensations, emotions, colors, images, visions, etc. Below are some questions to help you. You’ll be reading what you wrote afterward, as that’s a good way to learn how to witness and acknowledge this internal expression. Also, you’ll often catch something in your writing that you missed during the experience.
Questions to ask yourself: Can you name the emotions you are feeling? They can conflict with each other; that’s okay. If it’s hard to name them, describe them to the best of your ability. Now scan your body, beginning with your feet and move slowly up to your head. What sensations do you feel in your body (e.g., hot, cold, tingly)? Are there any sensations in specific areas? Are there images that come to mind as you scan? Let’s look in other ways too: Which areas feel the tightest? What do you notice when you put your attention on those areas? What is the quality of your breath? Do any areas feel numb? Is there a movement your body is wanting to do? Do you hear anything—sounds or words? Do you see any colors? Do particular body areas have different colors? Trust the images, or even visions, that show up for you. Energy and your psyche often work in images as a way to communicate with you.
Notice as much as you can. When you feel complete, take a few deep breaths and feel your feet. Imagine roots coming out of your feet, connecting you into the earth. Breathe with that image for a few moments to let your systems pause. When you feel yourself settled and back in the present moment, read what you wrote and be open to noticing more.
Note: it is very important to read as if your best friend wrote what’s on the page. Doing this allows you to witness yourself from another perspective. Notice the subtle shifts in awareness that occur as you read. I encourage you to to write about the wisdom that comes up in you.
This process of self-awareness and noticing will be easier at times than others. Practice can help you cultivate your non-judgmental witness, and you may be surprised at how that alone may shift the energy and charge of the original emotional/energetic contraction. The more we allow these gentle, subtle shifts to happen, the less contracted we become, the more in flow we are with life, and the more connected we are to the deepest part of ourselves.
In the coming months we’ll continue to explore how the more we develop a relationship to our bodily sensations, the more we can understand and intuit how these sensations are the expression of internal energy contractions. As we feel and allow room for contracted energies and witness their expressions, no matter how harsh, we will see that they are actually protecting a precious gift of ours within them, and that this process of following these energies is one way we connect to the Medicine of the Soul.
