Connecting to Medicine of the Soul

by a practice to channel your parts.

Hello, beautiful beings! We’re now in the beautiful sacred season of All Souls Day, Samhain, All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and Dia de los Muertos. In this sacred time of closeness to our loved ones on the other side, we’re invited to reach deeper within ourselves. So let’s explore how to connect with our inner witness—the true Self we are that holds all of ourselves with compassion.

Over these last months, we’ve worked with tuning into our body and its sensations, exploring deeper aspects of it. We’ve noticed that sensations often communicate something our system needs us to know, like a contraction or resistance we felt in response to an event or experience. Often, these sensations indicate old wounds that are holding onto pain, which create blocks that prevent us from feeling fully safe or free. We can lose our agency to the memory of that pain and fear. But we are empowered to heal. Today, I want to talk about the witness, the part of you that notices all this.

Who is this witness, the one seeing and feeling what’s happening? This witness isn’t the pain, fear, or even a part of you—it’s the sacred space-holder, the loving force that underlies all of it. It’s the soul, spirit, higher self, ancient self—the true Self. Connecting with the true Self is like recognizing the electricity that powers the TV we’re watching. Think of our body and mind as the screen, and our patterns are the programs, while the true Self is the electrical current—the energy behind it all. What’s important to understand is this witness, which is beyond our ego, holds a compassionate space for the parts of us that are in pain.

When we tune into this true Self, we get a glimpse of the force that transcends all experiences and emotions. I encourage you to start noticing and looking at the energy within your body that is your consciousness, your true being. Because it is you. Consider this: if you lost an arm, would you be any less you? The arm is a part of you that is not the true you. This higher, eternal self is patiently waiting for you to recognize it as the true self rather than the ego parts that can keep us stuck in our programs.

As we cultivate this awareness of the witness, we can detach from the parts of us that often respond reactively. This process helps us hold space for our emotions without becoming lost in them. It’s a gradual process of understanding that behind every triggered part or emotion, there is a wise witness who sees all with the unconditional love of the higher heart.

This wise self is only loving and lovingly engages with every contracted part without judgment, allowing each to express itself. So witnessed within such a compassionate container of love, the contracted parts of us can finally find the space to loosen and unweave and release with relief, which, in turn, releases us: it becomes easier to let go of old, unhelpful emotions and programs, allowing beliefs to shift and more true Self-energy to flow.

A way to connect with the witness Self is through channeling, where you serve as a medium for your contracted part. I encourage you to write/journal as you channel, sometimes called “channel writing.” This practice has been profoundly helpful for me in connecting with my contracted parts and bringing them into harmony with my greater self.

The practice:

1. First, sit and center yourself with a few deep breaths. Think of an experience that was mildly triggering, or focus on a contracted area in your body. Notice where in your body this contraction lives and allow your creative mind to explore its qualities. What is this area trying to tell you or reveal to you?

2. Tune into Details

• Where in your body is the sensation strongest?

• How does it feel (tight, nauseous, anxious, cold, hollow)?

• What does it look like (like a wound rubber band, a ball ready to launch, a black blob)?

3. Listen for Messages

Ask it what it wants you to know. Is there an emotion with the sensation? Is there a memory? For example, it might say something like, “hold tight” or “don’t speak.” This is the part that needs expression/needs you to let it express itself.

4. Channel Writing

Let your hand write all that comes into your mind and awareness. Without judgment or analysis, allow this contracted part of you to speak via words on paper, expressing what it needs to say. Free write for as long as this part needs you to. Be careful not to let your conscious adult mind step in and rationalize anything. Let this wounded part express all it needs to express itself authentically.

5. Present Moment Awareness

As this unfolds, sense that a larger part of you is witnessing with compassion, acknowledging that these sensations and expressions are aspects of you yet distinct from your true Self. This connection with your true Self, however strong or not strong it may feel in a given moment, is key to holding a larger, compassionate space for the part to express itself, letting the contracted energy unfold, and from your higher perspective, shift the story and allow healing. This step takes practice, and sometimes, some parts of us need time to express themselves.

6. Completion

When you feel like you are done, take some deep breaths and thank all the parts of you that showed up and allowed you to be vulnerable. Acknowledge how you feel in this moment, and if it feels appropriate, allow yourself to be grateful for the beautiful work you just did.

7. Regulate.

Let’s finish by tuning into your nervous system. With your hands at the back of your head and keeping your head still, shift your eyes to the left of your peripheral vision. Hold them there until you sigh, swallow, or yawn. Then, shift your eyes to the right, focusing on your peripheral vision, and do the same. Finally, twist from your waist, gently rotating both to the right and left and look around the room as you do so.

These small movements help to regulate your nervous system after such emotional work. It allows your entire system to know that it is safe to “come back.” This reassures your nervous system, helping it to recognize that this practice as safe, even if strong emotions arise. If we don’t regulate afterward, the nervous system may remember the experience as unsettling, which could create resistance to future sessions and be counterproductive.
